It’s almost impossible for advertisers to know who’s really sitting in front of a TV screen, and they typically aren’t told what content their ads are running against, either. TV measurement companies are turning back to panels for help. Panel-based measurement provider TVision announced a $16 million venture round led by alternative TV measurement provider iSpot.
NBCUniversal shared the results of its cross-platform measurement currency tests with iSpot, which became the programmer’s first certified measurement partner in January. NBCU certified eight more partners in March – but anyone expecting a comparison of how those partners perform against each other is still waiting. NBCU’s currency pilot test with iSpot included 67 advertisers representing 158 brands and compared reach and frequency measurements against linear and over-the-top (OTT) buys.
On Wednesday, iSpot.tv announced a $325 million investment from Goldman Sachs – a hefty chunk of change considering the company had previously raised a total of $58 million since it was founded in 2012. The company has a roadmap to enhance its TV measurement currency offerings (as well as attribution capabilities) with the new influx of funding.
On Thursday, iSpot.tv announced its acquisition of Tunity, an app that helps users watch TVs in public spaces, to add out-of-home screens to its TV data set. Out-of-home represents a substantial missing piece from cross-screen TV measurement, but it’s a challenge to measure OOH viewers the same way you measure screens in living rooms.
During the Summer Olympics, iSpot went for gold – and won. The alternate measurement provider bested more than 50 companies NBCUniversal was trialing as a currency alternative to Nielsen.
